"Lots and lots of new planets !"
19th June 2003 |
So says producer Rick McCallum ! First reported here, but he has since re-confirmed this several times. But how will we glimpse these new locales, and in what manner ? Will we be given a 'montage' of several worlds ravaged by the Clone Wars ? This would emphasise the breadth of this galactic conflict, and illustrate "all that the rebels have fought and suffered for". Or might we see these places under the velvet tyranny of the New Imperial Order of Palpatine ? Will we see the confirmation of the 'racial' segregation, the Wookiee enslavement, even the 'birth' of the rebel alliance ? |
In other developments, the 'Hyperspace' subscription feature continues to tease us with nuggets of information ! The other night I caught a glimpse on the webcam of Nick Gillard's training group, with one stuntman practicising with a longstaff ! Might that represent a double-bladed lightsabre ?! Or even a new weapon ?? Or merely a sparring staff for training ? |
Also, we have recently heard that Anakin himself will have suffered from the scrapes of warfare, being somewhat worse for wear ! And Ewan McGregor will sport a new look, more akin to that of Sir Alec Guiness in A New Hope, with a trimmed beard, a bushier chin, and grey at the temples !! |
And finally, a flurry of spy reports recently, as noted on the right hand side here ...... |

How soon can we make the jump ?
6th June 2003 |
|
StarWars.com's new subscription feature 'Jump to Hyperspace' went live yesterday, thursday, june the 5th. Until june the 10th, we will be able to get a free preview of most of its new content, after which there is a payment plan available to subscribe further. |
So what do we get for $20 / year ? Day-by-day access to the principal production of Episode III in the form of anecdotal 'diary entries' and webcams ; new movie images, either from cut scenes or candid behind-the-scenes ; video material, starting with the raw footage of the cut scene, the Jedi storming the Trade Federation droid control ship on Geonosis ; archived material such as the old Bantha Tracks newsletter ; personal customisation of one's StarWars.com account ; and special offers ! The Site indicates that this will be an evolving feature, and the Episode III coverage will continue after september ! |
It is understood that much of the content will be made available to the general and free parent site ; 'HyperSpace' essentially offers up-to-date material first to those who want to pay for it. Like much of Lucas' approach to the film industry, this promises to be revolutionary, and pioneer the tie-in of movie to online fanbase ! |

Portentous lines for Episode III ?
1st June 2003 |
At the end of May, number 86 of the Official Homing Beacon gave us an interview with concept & costume designer, Iain McCaig. He noted that Lucas has written a significant scene for Anakin, a turning-point on his descent into the Dark Side : Anakin Skywalker must make a decision that will resolve the fate of those nearest to him ! |
Now I am reminded of three intriguing lines from the Original Trilogy, dialogue that has been speculated over many times in our forums !
"The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force."
"Obi-Wan once thought as you do. You don't know the power of the Dark Side. I must obey my master."
"Give yourself to the Dark Side. It is the only way to save your friends." |
Many have wondered if these lines uttered by Darth Vader are drawn from first-hand experience. The first line from A New Hope could have simply been a proud flourish on the part of Lucas when he wrote the script in 1975 ; or it could hint that the Dark Jedi had cowed his opponent by the Force alone ! Might we see the Clone Wars be resolved by the skill of Skywalker ?? |
The second line suggests a humbling, possibly painful, reproach by Darth Sidious. We have already seen Darth Tyranus inflict Force lightning upon the Chosen One. Will he suffer once more at the hands of Sidious ? Or will a new form of punishment be revealed in Episode III ? |
And the third line hints at the comment made by Iain McCaig that Anakin will face a life-changing decision, and be torn between two possible courses of action. What might this be ? Already we have seen his friction for the Jedi Order. So might it be a choice involving his beloved Padmé and his enchanting guide, Palpatine ? Will this decision lead to the fate of his wife ? Will the Sith Chancellor be behind the events that lead to this turning-point ? Very likely ;o) |
