"Revealing the Episode VII plot !"
25th May 2007
To mark the 30th Anniversary of the theatrical release of 'Star Wars' in May 1977, Scott and I are proud to present our very own part-illustrated plot for Star Wars Episode VII Plague of Doom. You can access it here, or by following the link to the left hand side.
First up this month is Act I of Plague of Doom, with the action opening in orbit about a blue ocean world, before moving on to the grass plains of Townowi and Ophuchi, the capital city of Nal Hutta. In June, we will release the middle segment of the story, where our heroes' investigation takes them onward, and July will see Act III send our heroes on their missions once more as they face the Imperial operations and push back the Shroud of the Dark Side !
As you read it, you will notice that we have utilised many names conjured up by Lucas in his early drafts, as well as tried to mimic the events and dialogue of the existing films. Our intention is to present Episode VII and its two sequels as part of Lucas' original nine-part symphony, as if existing plot points were left deliberately unresolved by him to act as a springboard to complete his story.
By the very nature of our project, the illustrations will be slowly but steadily produced by us, so as we create these pictures each month we will 'drop' them into the plot line.
For example, over the past few weeks, as we've been tweaking the plotting for the final act of episode VII, we have also been able to produce the following pictures.
Master Jedi Luke Skywalker's X-Wing fighter booms out of hyperspace over a blue-green planet, a flurry of commotion in orbit behind him.
Great artwork by Scott shows Luke's X-Wing arriving in the Mon Cal system !
With a graceful loop and roll, Luke turns his starship around to face this new world.
The X-Wing loops up and back towards Mon Calamar, artwork by Scott.
As Scott and I review the look of Aquilae, the former rebel base on Mon Calamar, he's amended his picture of the approach to it taken by the X-Wing and the Mon Cal coraller.
Approaching the coral island of Aquilae, artwork by Scott.
The coraller leads the X-Wing through a narrow fissure near the sea-base of the coral island.
In this dynamic picture by Scott, Luke follows his sister into the island Aquilae.
Luke and Leia disembark into the massive cave that serves as a hangar for the rebels and the newly-formed Galactic Alliance, and the Jedi congratulates his sister on her piloting skills and her ability with the Force.
Luke congratulates his sister Leia on her growing skills, a warm picture created by Nat.
Luke then turns to unload the precious cargo that he had gathered in the Kyber system, whilse Leia confers with the Mon Cal flight crew.
The jedi Master unloads the cargo containers brought back from the Kyber system, artwork by Nat.
Inside Aquilae Master Skywalker takes the precious cargo mined from the Kyber system to his Jedi students.... and is greeted by a survivor of Order 66 ! Master Jedi Elder Dree Tan has an interesting story to tell, and Luke's hopes for his new fledgling Jedi Order rise !
Nat has an aged cameo as Jedi Elder Dree Tan in this illustration created by him.
On their return from Kessel in the Falcon, Luke tests for the Force in Alana Seren, watched over by his sister, Leia Solo. Both are amazed by her powers, and intruiged that, once again, all the Jedi hopefuls appear to be older than them....
In this great picture by Scott unveiling a new cargo hold inside the Falcon, Luke tests Alana for the Force.
Much later, an imperial shuttle descends at night on Coruscant, the capital city-planet of the galaxy.
Scott depicts a shuttle arriving on Coruscant.
Alana Seren demonstrates her quickly learned abilities of the Jedi Arts, as she Force-pushes these stormtroopers away from the entrance to the Imperial Palace !
Nat presents this image of Alana Force-pushing the Imperial stormtroopers !
As an homage to the famous Star Wars poster of '77, Nat presents this pose of a victorious Luke, lightsabre held high, in front of the Imperial Palace on Coruscant, with Alana at his side.
A homage to the 1977 poster, Luke triumphs outside the Imperial Palace entrance.
This new artwork can be seen in full size in the recently unveiled gallery section of the VE-ST, found here, under the subsections entitled 'Mon Cal', 'Kessel', and 'Coruscant'.
We hope you enjoy this first act of Episode VII, and stay tuned for the remaining two acts that will close Plague of Doom ! We already have the outlines for Episodes VIII and IX mapped out, and will turn our attention to those in good time.
Finally, the official site has begun a great new weekly series revealing in-universe lore and behind-the-scenes trivia for Episode IV A New hope. Entitled 'Visual Guides', it takes each chapter of the dvd release and presents high quality labelled images. I can only hope a similar in depth presentation will be delivered for the other five episodes ! :o)
