Episode VIII filming in Ireland !
30th May 2016 |
Through the month of May, the Episode VIII production has been filming in the Republic of Ireland !
The crew has been spotted across the north-west, west, and south-west coasts. These locations have obviously doubled for Ahch-To, the maritime island location seen at the end of The Force Awakens where Rey finds Master Jedi Luke Skywalker. But since the real-world locale of 'Skellig Michael' is so restricted, the unit has scouted suitably similar coastal spots for filming.
Interestingly, the 'beehive' huts briefly glimpsed in TFA have been recreated, as was a portion of the underside hull of the very-likely Millennium Falcon. Most intriguingly, actor Adam Driver who plays Kylo Ren was seen on set (along with Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, and new Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo), as well as reports surfacing of dark-clad characters - the Knights of Ren ?? - surrounding a ship (that might have crashed and/or been on fire, or at least charred), and then being involved in a duel against Luke ?! Further rumours suggest that Rey and Kylo engage once more in a sword duel !
Obviously, we have no idea of the plotting - nor the timeframe - for these sequences, since, with the precendent of the 'flashback' Force-Vision, some or all of these scenes could be historical (eg, the Knights of Ren could have pursued Luke to Ahch-To originally, and perished there at Luke's hand).

In addition to the Ireland shoot, pictures surfaced of an exterior set (in Surrey) with the Falcon [photo montage of the ship here], and a gnarled tree, and the island steps seen previously on Ahch-To, along with, high above on a wooded mesa, a huge curved building, almost in the style of the PT architecure. On first sight, this building could be a Jedi Temple, but there really is no evidence for this, and the locale could in fact be entirely separate to where the Falcon is parked, or even be on another world entirely ! |

Frank Oz has been seen at Pinewood Studios, lending credence to the idea that he will be at least advising for and voicing Yoda if not performing him. I imagine it's more than likely that an ST Yoda will be computer-generated, but I am heartened considerably if the ancient Jedi Master is returning ! |

The space battle above Imperial-held Kessel continues to rage in the illustrated fan-fic Episode VII : Plague of Doom ! Realising that his ship can't take any more blows, Han Solo brings the Millennium Falcon into the sanctuary of the hangar bay aboard the Mon Cal startcruiser the Home One. |

Meanwhile Wedge Antilles is joined by a squadron wingman, and they both dodge bursts of flak and laser fire ! |

Wedge glances back at 'Red Six', and suggests an attack plan... |
