Rey Kenobi ??
30th September 2020 |
The entertainment internet went into a slight tizz with the revelation from actress Daisy Ridley that her character of Rey might at one point have been a Kenobi ! Sadly - and unsurprisingly now - her news confirms how 'slap-dash' the overall plotting was for the Sequel Trilogy. Digital Spy was one of many sites that reported on this.
On the conclusion of The Force Awakens, I had always hoped she would have been a Solo, leading to a brother-sister clash to echo the father-son and the friend-friend from the previous trilogies ; it might have been 'painfully obvious', but that would have made more sense in a saga all about family ties. Linking Obi-Wan Kenobi to Rey would have been interesting, and possibly echo his involvement in other parts of the episodes, but for anyone unaware of the Clone Wars series and the character's development with a romance, it might have felt odd having a previously loyal and celibate Jedi Knight now become a father or grandfather. Personally, I had always seen Obi-Wan as a 'pillar of the [Jedi] community and role-model', an unblemished Galahad figure from the Arthurian Tales ; and this is important from a story-telling point of view, so that the audience can compare their fallible hero with an untarnished secondary character.
Making Rey a Palpatine, who later renounces her heritage, felt rushed and a scrabble for an interesting idea.... but without the mental follow-through required to foretell the ramifications. The final film relies on cloning as its answer.... but then, as I've said before, this would have been the perfect opportunity to return to Kamino, and, in turn, move Rey from a Solo-Nobody to a clone of evil..... if not a clone of Luke's hand reclaimed from Cloud City....

Through the month of September I investigated the web coding options for dynamic menus and breakout or cascading information boxes, and I eventually, using two in-line iframes on one page, produced a set of horizontal 'breakout tooltips' and a set of open/close 'accordian' drop-down boxes. These became, respectively, a timeline and an array of topic boxes ; the former, a timeline from the Old Republic and Sith Empire through to the events of my Virtual Edition Episode X The Riddle of the Pirates, and the latter, information panels under the headings of 'Characters', 'Locations', 'Organisations', and 'Terminology'.
This VE Encyclopedia can be found here, and accessed from the left hand sidebar. All that remains, is for me to populate it with pertinent facts from the VE stories.....
